I can't pay my business rates - what happens next?

Business rates enforcement is procedural and quick: a missed instalment triggers a reminder, an unanswered reminder cancels the instalment plan and makes the full year due, and the council's next stop is a magistrates' liability order - often within weeks.

After a liability order

The council can instruct enforcement agents (with their fees added), attach the debt, or - for companies - pursue winding up; rates arrears also commonly travel with rent arrears, since both track a premises the business has outgrown or can no longer feed.

Before it gets there

Check the reliefs - small business rate relief, retail/hospitality reliefs where in force, empty property exemptions - because businesses regularly pay rates they don't owe.

Ask the council for a payment arrangement early; billing authorities agree them routinely for engaged ratepayers, far less readily after the liability order.

And if the premises no longer earn their keep, the rates bill is the prompt for the bigger decision - downsizing, lease exit, or the honest options conversation if the arrears are one fire among several.

Where it fits the wider picture

Rates are an unsecured company debt in any liquidation, and directors aren't personally liable for them absent the usual exceptions - the risk isn't personal, it's velocity, because councils enforce faster than most creditors.
