Can you keep a company name after liquidation?

Not without care: section 216 of the Insolvency Act bans anyone who was a director in the year before liquidation from involvement, for five years, with a company or business using the same or a similar name - and breach is a criminal offence that makes you personally liable for the new business's debts.

What counts as "similar"

Close enough to suggest association with the old company - which catches trading styles, brand names, and near-misses, not just the registered name; "Smith Builders Ltd" to "Smith Building Services Ltd" is exactly the territory the rule patrols.

The three exceptions

Buying the business from the liquidator and giving the prescribed notice to creditors within the deadline; obtaining court permission; and a narrow existing-name exception for names already in use by another company in the group.

Each is formal and deadline-driven - the notice route in particular fails when done late or informally, which is why it belongs in the restart plan from day one.

The practical rule

If the new name is anywhere near the old one, treat it as a legal question before a branding one - the cost of asking is a conversation; the cost of guessing wrong is unlimited personal liability.
