How Long Does Liquidation Take?
There is no single answer - the time a liquidation takes depends on the type of procedure, the complexity of the company's affairs, and how quickly assets can be realised.
Members' Voluntary Liquidation (MVL)
A straightforward MVL can be completed in 6 to 12 months, and sometimes faster where assets are simply cash. The key steps - Declaration of Solvency, appointment of the liquidator, distribution of funds - are relatively quick when there are no disputes.
Creditors' Voluntary Liquidation (CVL)
A CVL typically takes 12 to 24 months from appointment to final dissolution. The initial stages are fast (the company can enter liquidation within weeks), but the liquidator must then realise assets, agree creditor claims, conduct director conduct investigations, and make distributions. Complex cases with property, litigation, or disputes can take longer.
Compulsory Liquidation
A compulsory liquidation, triggered by a creditor's winding-up petition, can move quickly to the winding-up order (often a matter of weeks), but the subsequent liquidation process itself takes a similar time to a CVL.
What Affects the Timeline?
- Asset realisation - Selling property, stock, or book debts takes time; cash is fastest.
- Number of creditors - More claims to agree means more administration.
- Director conduct investigations - Standard but can extend the process.
- Disputes or litigation - Any legal challenge will lengthen the timeline significantly.
- Realising book debts - Chasing customers for unpaid invoices can take months.
What Happens First?
In a CVL, the company can be placed into liquidation quickly - often within two to four weeks of your first conversation with us. Once the liquidator is appointed, the company effectively stops trading, staff are made redundant, and the realisation process begins.
