A guide, not advice. This explains how things generally work. A licensed insolvency practitioner will tell you what applies to your company or to you.

Can I liquidate a limited company myself?

No - formal liquidation legally requires a licensed insolvency practitioner as liquidator; there is no DIY CVL or MVL, and anyone offering to arrange one without a named licensed IP is worth verifying carefully.

What directors can do themselves

For a clean, solvent company with little left in it, strike off is the genuine self-service route - a DS01 form, the notification duties, and patience.

Directors also do real work within a formal liquidation - gathering records, preparing the company, completing the statement of affairs - which is partly why engaged directors get cheaper, faster liquidations.

Why the IP requirement exists

The liquidator's independence is the protection: creditors trust the process because it isn't run by the people who ran the company, employees' claims are verified by an officer with regulatory accountability, and directors themselves benefit from a conduct review done properly once rather than reopened later.

What about just... stopping?

Abandoning a company - ceasing to trade, filing nothing, waiting - ends in compulsory strike-off at best and a creditor's winding up petition at worst, with the conduct questions of a compulsory liquidation attached.

The affordable version of doing it properly exists - funding options for the fee included - and it starts with a free call.
